SENATORS LEND THEIR COLLECTIVE STRENGTH TO FIGHT RESERVATION CRIME

ROSEBUD — A bipartisan group of senators is hoping to fight high crime levels on Native American reservations with legislation that would boost tribal law enforcement and improve coordination between federal and local authorities.

The bill, introduced last week after months of consultation and hearings held by the senators, would encourage more aggressive federal prosecution of reservation crimes, enhance the sentencing authority of tribal courts and boost resources for investigating and prosecuting crimes of sexual violence.

ROSEBUD — At no time in the history of the Rosebud Indian Reservation has it been more important to have a homegrown newspaper reporting on the reservation. That is the way PR Gregg-Bear, publisher and editor of the Sicangu Sun Times, sees the picture on his reservation.

“When you get right down to it, it’s a humanitarian project of the first order, because it deals with passing on and exchanging information,” says Gregg-Bear, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

ROSEBUD --- With the recent hanging death of yet another teen suicide, the Rosebud Sioux Tribe is reeling from the devastating social impact of suicide --- now up to eight in this year alone --- that some tribal leaders, fearful of an uncontrolled situation, have been trying to find answers on their own and turning to a slow-moving federal government for help.

''We are in the midst of an ongoing battle,'' said Ken LaDeaux, RST chief of staff. ''The problem hasn't diminished," despite a declaration.

ROSEBUD — An effort by Rosebud Community recently to obtain a favorable ruling from RST Ethics Commission regarding the community’s absent council representatives, was shot down after the three reps were subpoenaed to offer their own testimony before the commission.

From there, things got worse.
